Join the Honors Book Club
Attention students, alumni, and friends of Honors!
We are entering the second year of the Honors Book Club, and I am mixing up the format a bit for two reasons. One, it is HARD to accommodate everyone's schedules to plan regular meetings; and two, it is equally difficult for me to commit to attending 4+ hours of Book Club sessions every other week as a discussion leader. Thus, we are moving to a hybrid format. What this means:
We are entering the second year of the Honors Book Club, and I am mixing up the format a bit for two reasons. One, it is HARD to accommodate everyone's schedules to plan regular meetings; and two, it is equally difficult for me to commit to attending 4+ hours of Book Club sessions every other week as a discussion leader. Thus, we are moving to a hybrid format. What this means:
- Book Club participants will connect through a dedicated Slack forum. Slack is a digital team management platform that you can use on your desktop or phone. In this forum, all participants can discuss the current book and network with each other at their convenience.
- We will also meet synchronously once a week, on either Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday. A Doodle poll will be shared every Monday on the Book Club Slack channel. Participants will have 24 hours to reply - the synchronous meeting time for each week will be announced on Tuesday. The time slot convenient for the greatest number of people replying will be chosen. Of course, participants may not be available to attend every in-person session, but hopefully this process will afford greater access and flexibility to all participants.
- The Book Club will read one book a month. Books will have no more than 300 pages. In order to keep costs down for participants, preference is given to books that are available full-text online at JMU Libraries or available to purchase for less than $10.
- We will also keep Book Club going during the summer, albeit solely with asynchronous Slack discussions. Synchronous (and hopefully in-person soon!) sessions will only be offered in fall and spring semesters.
Interested in participating?
Book Club will kick off on February 1, 2021. You may opt to participate any time (no more deadlines to join!) by logging into the Book Club Slack community (click on the JOIN button below to receive your invitation). Please note: ALL communication about Book Club will go through the Slack channel. Do not expect to receive additional emails regarding Book Club.
