Our first Toolbox Workshop in October will focus on cultivating a professional online presence. Join us on Thursday, October 8 at 4:00 p.m.!
Students need to keep an eye on their digital presence across various social media platforms. Employers will look you up. Potential graduate schools will look you up, too. You should be looking up yourself as well! The most exciting part of this Toolbox Workshop is that we'll be joined by JMU alumna Emma Maynard ('07, '16M). Ms. Maynard formerly worked with employer relations at JMU in both Career and Academic Planning and in the Office of Alumni Relations, and she currently serves as Student Success Advisor for Graduate Programs in the Cameron School of Business, University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Ms. Maynard's insights will be invaluable in helping students understand what employers and grad programs think when they look you up on social media. RSVP today! Honors will be hosting drop-in Zoom sessions to answer your questions in a relaxed and informal setting every Friday in the month of October. Current student Honors Ambassadors will be on hand to provide invaluable student feedback and let prospective students know what it's really like to be a member of the Honors College! To get the Zoom link, please RSVP at [email protected].
It's a weird year if you're in high school and wanting to visit college campuses. Here at JMU Honors, we want prospective students to feel welcome to reach out at any time. You can always reach out to with me with your questions at [email protected].
I also want to share some EXCITING opportunities designed specifically for prospective students this October:
In lieu of an on-campus Family Weekend, Honors is excited to partner with the Office of Parent Relations to participate in Fall Family Fridays. From October 9 through November 20, Honors will be bringing a fun and informative line-up designed with family members in mind. Students - please share this info with your family members, and we hope to "see" you in these programs! Scroll the bottom of this post for all of the synchronous programs.
Email [email protected] for information on how to RSVP for individual programs. Our second Toolbox Workshop for the month of September will be held via Zoom on September 24 at 5:00 p.m. In this Toolbox Workshop, we acknowledge that people are quite uncomfortable with change, for many valid reasons. We'll talk about tools you can uses to guide yourself through periods of transition, whether changes in personal relationships, adapting to new contexts and environments, shifts in your ways of thinking, and more. Guest presenters include:
Our September 23 Honors Ambassadors meeting will focus on diversity and inclusion in the Honors College, and we hope to have guest presenters from the Honors Diversity Council. We will additionally finalize plans for virtual Open House programming in October. We'll also welcome our newest Ambassadors! Details for log-in to Zoom will be shared on Slack.
In these trying times, we need a boost of looking on the bright side. The Honors College fall movie night series will feature movies known for their resilience messages. You'll see characters overcoming the odds, excelling in the face of hardship, and living their dreams. The first movie we'll feature will be Thursday, September 25 at 9:00 p.m. We'll watch Will Smith's based-on-real-life movie The Pursuit of Happyness. In case you're unfamiliar with the plot, here's a quick description from IMDb:
"Based on a true story about a man named Christopher Gardner. Gardner has invested heavily in a device known as a "bone density scanner". He feels like he has it made selling these devices. However, they do not sell well as they are marginally better than x-ray at a much higher price. As Gardner works to make ends meet, his wife leaves him and he loses his apartment. Forced to live out in the streets with his son, Gardner continues to sell bone density scanners while concurrently taking on an unpaid internship as a stockbroker, with slim chances for advancement to a paid position. Before he can receive pay, he needs to outshine the competition through 6 months of training, and to sell his devices to stay afloat." Participants in Movie Night will use Netflix Play, a Chrome extension that synchronizes watch times while enabling a chat function for viewers. Hopefully participants will be able to enjoy watching The Pursuit of Happyness together while engaging in intellectually stimulating conversations and reflections via the chat feature. If you are interested in joining us for Movie Night in September, please RSVP. All participants will be added to a GroupMe. You will receive a Netflix Play link via the GroupMe so that you can log-in and participate! The first Honors Ambassador meeting for fall will be September 9 at 5:00 p.m. via Zoom. We'll be joined by Dr. Michael Davis, Executive Advisor to President Alger. He will be able to answer your questions about ANYTHING related to COVID, admissions, changing building names, racial equality, athletics, dining services... name it - he'll be happy to answer. Think of your questions! If you can't make the meeting at that time, I'll record and send out so that you can access content later. If you have questions and you know you can't attend, please send them to me in advance and I'll ask them on your behalf. We will also discuss Ambassadors recruitment, and determine how current Ambassadors would like to be involved in that process. Details for Zoom log-in will be shared via Slack.
Continuing with our resiliency theme, Honors will be hosting a series of informal lunchtime Zoom sessions in which we watch a TEDTalk together and then chat about it. Our first TEDTalk Tuesday will be September 15 at 12:00 p.m. We will watch Lucy Hone present "The Three Secrets of Resilient People." If you are interested in participating, please RSVP by September 14. You will receive information on how to log-in to Zoom via email.
There are plenty of experiences and opportunities you should take advantage of before graduation. What does it mean to be a JMU Duke to you? While we won't be able to join face-to-face in Shenandoah for this program, this Zoom session on September 17 at 7:00 p.m. is limited to freshmen Honors students to give you a chance to think about what you want to accomplish over the next four years. And when I say "accomplish" I don't necessarily mean resume-builders... I mean all the fun stuff too! What sporting events do you want to attend? What clubs/orgs do you want to check out? What UREC fitness classes do you want to tackle? We'll share ideas, and do some fun activities to help your plan for the next four years! We appreciate your RSVP.
