Work in Progress is a casual writing group that meets regularly in Hillcrest to talk writing, eat snacks, and get to know one another. Are you a great writer? This group is for you. Students in the incoming class of 2026 are completing a common read together as part of their HON 100 first-year seminar experience. The book selected is Goodbye, again by Jonny Sun. The Hillcrest Club, our Honors young alumni network, hosted a terrific panel titled "Young Alumni Tips and Tricks" on June 1. If you are a new Honors alum, or are anticipating your launch into the "real world" in the next year or so, check it out!
Hear about what it takes to develop a board game for commercial markets. Kevin Bertram, owner of Fort Circle Games will be our guest speaker and special guest. Dr. Nikki Giovanni is one of this country’s most widely read poets and one of the U.S.’s most renowned poets world-wide. Her poem, “Knoxville, Tennessee,” is arguably the single literary work most often associated with that city. Dr. Giovanni has received numerous awards during her career, including seven Image Awards from the N.A.A.C.P., more than two-dozen honorary degrees, the first Rosa Parks Woman of Courage Award, the Langston Hughes Medal for Poetry, and the Carl Sandburg Literary Award; additionally, Oprah Winfrey recognized her in 2005 as one of twenty-five “Living Legends.” She continues to teach, write, and publish books, the most recent of which is A Good Cry. Her newest collection, Make Me Rain, was released in October of 2020. |
