This program is open to all interested students, faculty, and friends of JMU Honors. We LOVE bringing our alumni back to interact with current Honors students, and I am so excited to be hosting Erin Rettig ('96) via Zoom on Tuesday, February 23. In this Alumni Spotlight: From Harrisonburg to Hollywood, Erin will talk about his experiences as the stage engineer for the Newman Scoring Stage on the Fox Lot in Los Angeles. You can check out more about his career HERE and HERE. Erin is interested in learning more about Honors students and your aspirations. RSVP for the Zoom link!
Honors College early action admission decisions will be released soon, and we are SO excited to meet the new cohort of the class of 2025! We understand that it is a trying time for admitted students, and we want to make sure that you know that we are here for YOU. Don't miss the opportunity to casually drop in and say “hi!” - our student Honors Ambassadors will be participating in weekly drop-in Zoom sessions to answer your questions about Honors and the Honors student experience. This opportunity is available to you every Friday afternoon at 4:00 in February and March. Please email me for the Zoom link. Welcome to Honors!!!
Major Mixers are informal Zoom conversations designed to help Honors Students connect with peers interested in similar areas of research, but who do not necessarily have the exact same major. Embodying the interdisciplinary spirit of Honors, these mixers allow students to interact across disciplinary boundaries. Students get to decide where they "fit in." Participants will meet each other, share their interests, have fun, and hopefully walk away with new friends and the opportunity to stay connected via GroupMe. We’ll be hosting Major Mixers on a weekly basis, so there will be plenty of opportunities to students to participate! Click on READ MORE for the full schedule.
Honors Book Club will be kicking off on February 1. We will be reading A Million Aunties, by Alecia McKenzie. The book is available full-text online at JMU Libraries through EBSCOhost Ebooks. If you are interested in participating in Book Club, read all about it and sign up to participate HERE. We are mixing up the format this semester so that Book Club is a flexible experience - you will be able to participate asynchronously and/or in weekly Zoom chats as your schedule allows, and you don't have to commit to one format or the other. It's like a choose your own adventure Book Club! We hope you'll join us!
I recruit for Honors Ambassadors twice a year, and it's that time again! If you are interested in connecting 1:1 with prospective students, in representing JMU and Honors in CHOICES, and generally in singing the praises of Honors I would love for YOU to join this esteemed group of super volunteers!
Honors Ambassadors is made of up diverse students whose backgrounds and majors speak to the wide array of prospective students interested in JMU. We specifically hope that BIPOC, first generation, and LGBTQIA+ students will want to join our Ambassador community. We enthusiastically encourage students with Spanish language speaking ability to apply. We will be adding approximately 5-10 new Ambassadors to our group with spring recruitment. Applications are due by 11:59 p.m. on February 1. Interviews will be held the week of February 8. In order to apply, CLICK HERE. Questions? I'm always here to provide answers! Hopefully all Honors students, faculty, staff and alumni had a restful and rejuvenating Thanksgiving break. In a difficult year, it was nice to unplug, relax and spend time reflecting on the people and relationships that matter. As Thanksgiving break was fast approaching, the Hillcrest Club Advisors hit "send" on the fall alumni newsletter. You can access the newsletter below - we are so excited to feature student success and ongoing Honors initiatives. We are also excited to look ahead with recruitment for additional Hillcrest Club Advisors. As a reminder, the Hillcrest Club is the young alumni network for the Honors College. It is designed to provide opportunities for alumni to stay connected with each other and with students during their first decade post-graduation. If you are interested in taking a young alumni leadership role, we hope that you will consider serving as a Hillcrest Club Advisor. Recruitment runs until the end of January - you can access the application at www.tinyurl.com/2021HCAApp. Please reach out to me at [email protected] if you have any questions. Regardless of your graduation date - whether upcoming in December 2020 or twenty years ago in 2000 - we are so grateful that you are part of the Honors alumni family. We hope that you will stay involved in the ongoing work of supporting our students! Newsletter Download
Virtual Open House will be held on October 15 at 5:00. Prospective students can access the Zoom by visiting the Honors page on the Office of Admissions website. The program will include a brief introduction to Honors by yours truly, with an open Q&A session featuring five student Honors Ambassadors representing different academic colleges. The Ambassadors are so excited to answer prospective student questions, so please don't hold back! We're excited to hear what's on your mind, and to let you know what a wonderful community you'll find in JMU Honors!
Our second Factfulness conversation is scheduled for October 15 at 4:00 p.m. This informal program will feature an Honors alum with professional experience doing research relating to climate change, Dr. Craig Ramseyer ('09), Assistant Professor of Geography at Virginia Tech. Dr. Ramseyer's primary area of research focuses on tropical rainfall and how climate change is likely to change drought and flooding.
Join this Zoom session to hear our panelist's views of cultivating a factful mindset and how factfulness helps him in his efforts to understand and counteract global climate change. Please RSVP to receive your Zoom log-in information. JMU Honors is excited to kick off our Fall Family Fridays series with a synchronous Zoom lecture exploring JMU conspiracy theories. The lecture will be presented by Dr. Michael Davis, Executive Advisor to President Alger, on Friday, October 9 at 12 p.m. Prior to his work in the President's Office, Dr. Davis spent 11 years as a faculty member in the School of Communication Studies, where he taught a popular class on the rhetoric of conspiracy theories. Join this fun and light-hearted lecture to hear about JMU-specific conspiracies, learn where they came from, and whether any of them are true! RSVP for the Zoom link.
